A dialogue on time travel in two coats
The Department of Invented Heritage
A key. A photograph. A perfectly innocent chair. Name it, and the architect will manufacture its provenance.
“New things are vulgar.Let us give yours a little weather.”
Provenance, unusually disclosed
This began as an early experiment in impressionistic prompting: an LLM’s creative excursion, partially elicited by A. E. Wild. Its original dialogue is preserved here, including the model’s confident inventions and unexplained allusions. It is a fictional exchange, not a historical transcript or a statement about its prompter.
This second coat gives the artifact an inhabitable cabinet, a procedural antiquarian workshop, and a generative score. The workshop borrows a little of the symbolic machinery explored in The Vesper Building: material matching, a seeded grammar, and a short ledger that lets the ghost refer to earlier objects.
No language model runs here. The original dialogue is fixed; workshop responses are assembled from written rules. Object names stay in this page’s memory until it is closed or reloaded. “Keep the provenance” downloads your ledger.
The music is synthesized in your browser. Patina unsettles the tuning and the forgery; Courtyard changes the echo; Company invites more notes. The dialogue changes the harmony. Objects contribute motifs. Sound pauses when you leave the tab.
Earlier editions remain in the source archive.
The Retroactor needs JavaScript to move its lever. The original text is also available in the dialogue source.
